The Escape from Playtime playtest opens on October 1, 2026, ahead of the game's October 21 Steam Early Access launch. Mob Entertainment's Poppy Playtime spinoff puts players inside the bodies of the Smiling Critters, sending them through a hostile toy factory to collect materials and return alive.

With recognizable toys as its playable characters, the game explores the factory from a smaller perspective. Its co-op scavenging loop makes the test worth following for groups who want horror built around exploration, communication and getting resources home.

What Makes This Poppy Playtime Spinoff Different

According to Mob Entertainment's announcement, a mysterious Voice sends the Critters out to gather resources for a building project, promising them a home and freedom. The abandoned Playtime Co. factory is full of rejected creations that stalk its rooms and corridors.

That premise gives the cute toys an unsettling role: they are vulnerable workers following instructions whose purpose they do not understand. The horror comes from trying to survive the factory while questioning what their deliveries are helping to create.

Runs use changing, procedurally generated environments. Players scavenge tools, solve puzzles, hide and find alternate routes through spaces including classrooms, warehouses and testing labs. Exploring more ground can help the group, but separating also makes regrouping harder.

The developer's official FAQ places the story after the Hour of Joy, when Playtime Co.'s toy experiments rebelled against its employees. It also confirms that Escape from Playtime has a development team separate from the main Poppy Playtime chapters.

Escape from Playtime Playtest Dates and Signup

Mob's September 30 beta announcement gives the following schedule. The test and Early Access release are separate events.

Escape from Playtime Multiplayer: Four Players, With an Eight-Player Test

The announced game supports solo play or online co-op with up to three friends. During the beta, groups can expand to eight, but Mob recommends four.

Proximity voice chat makes nearby teammates easier to hear and distant ones harder to hear. A microphone is optional, according to the FAQ, though the developer recommends voice communication. For groups, that makes deciding when to split up part of the appeal rather than just a way to search faster.

What Players Should Expect From the Beta

The beta includes four Shifts, with some lore, puzzles, enemies and characters withheld. Use Steam friends-list invitations; mouse and keyboard is recommended.

Controller compatibility is inconsistent. Known issues include visual problems, clipping and revival bugs.

Those limitations matter when assessing the game. A missing character or puzzle in this test does not necessarily describe the launch offering. The useful things to evaluate are whether your group enjoys the resource-gathering loop, whether navigation is clear and whether communication makes surviving together satisfying.

Escape from Playtime Release Date and Early Access Plans

The Steam listing schedules Early Access for October 21, 2026. The initial release is planned to include all eight Smiling Critters, one starter zone and a core enemy lineup.

Mob targets roughly a year in Early Access, with timing dependent on development alongside the community. Version 1.0 is intended to add content and improve balance, performance and compatibility; there is no fixed completion date.

For players who want a finished horror campaign, waiting for later updates is reasonable. For a group willing to try an evolving co-op game, the beta offers a chance to judge the basic loop before making a purchase decision.

Escape from Playtime Platforms, Price and Hardware

The FAQ confirms Windows 10/11 through Steam as the current launch plan. PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and mobile versions have not been announced; Mob leaves open the possibility of other platforms later.

No USD purchase price appears in the official materials checked on October 1, 2026. The Steam page says the price is planned to rise for version 1.0. Do not confuse this beta signup with a confirmed free-to-play business model.
