Marvel's Wolverine Criticism Is Getting Far Too Harsh

Marvel's Wolverine criticism has a reasonable starting point: players want control, and a big-budget action game should respect that. Insomniac's PS5 exclusive launched on September 15, 2026, but complaints about its guidance systems deserve a more measured argument. Calling out intrusive cues is useful. Treating them as a complete judgment of the game goes too far.

Marvel's Wolverine criticism has a valid core

In VGC's review, Jordan Middler criticizes repetitive combat and excessive guidance while praising the characters and visual presentation. Those are specific objections, backed by his experience with the game. They deserve to be taken seriously.

If a game repeatedly interrupts exploration or its fights stop developing, impressive animation does not erase the problem. Players buying an action game are entitled to expect engaging action. Defending Wolverine should not require pretending otherwise.

A guidance problem is not a verdict on everything

A clip can demonstrate an awkward instruction or an unnecessary marker. On its own, it cannot establish how often that happens across the campaign, how combat develops, or whether the story works. The conclusion needs to match the evidence.

That is why reducing Wolverine to a joke about following glowing trails feels unfair. Even the critical VGC review identifies strengths alongside its complaints. You can decide those strengths are insufficient without acting as though they do not exist.

There is also a difference between disliking a directed adventure and showing that it fails at being one. PlayStation explicitly describes Wolverine as a single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure that is not open world. That does not excuse weak encounters or intrusive prompts, but a linear structure is not automatically a design failure.

The latest changes deserve accurate criticism

Insomniac's 1.001.006 patch notes, dated September 25, 2026, add on/off options for Whisky Bottle Scent Trails, Material Crate Audio Clues, and Nightmare Door Roots. The same notes explicitly say that story-critical Senses still appear.

That distinction matters. It would be wrong to claim all guidance is now optional, and equally wrong to discuss these particular cues as though players still have no choice. The useful criticism is precise: which remaining prompts interfere with exploration, and what control should players have over them?

More choice is a better demand

Insomniac's official accessibility list documents options including QTE Autocomplete, Traversal Assist, and adjustable dodge/parry timing. Their existence is not evidence of bad design. Optional assistance can make a game playable for someone who would otherwise struggle with its inputs.

That does not settle whether the default experience gives players enough agency. It means criticism should distinguish optional assistance from mandatory direction. Asking for clearer settings and fewer unavoidable interruptions gives the developer something concrete to address.

Wolverine does not deserve immunity from criticism. It deserves criticism proportional to the evidence. Explain where control disappears, where combat becomes repetitive, and why those problems outweigh the strengths. That makes a stronger case than turning a flawed adventure into shorthand for everything wrong with blockbuster games.
